A detailed account dating from the war of Saint-Sardos (1324-5) written by the English clerk William de Martley (Guillaume de Martheleye) informs us about the building of siege engines/war machines at Bordeaux by English engineers (ingeniatores) and craftsmen. This work was in response to the impending danger embodied by the French armies, and these throwing machines were intended to defend Bordeaux against a possible attack on its port.
