Notes

Michael Jones' account of Audley in the DNB states: 'He was the illegitimate son of Sir James Audley (d. 1334) of Stratton Audley, Oxfordshire , and Eva, daughter of Sir John Clavering. Study of his life is complicated by homonymity; in particular he has frequently been confused with his relative James Audley (d. 1386), lord of Heighley, but there were also several other contemporaries of the same name.' In Jones account his long career is set out. Being an illegitimate son with few estates in England, and no heirs by his wife who predeceased him, he remained in France and Aquitaine for most of his later life. Kt, going to Gascony in the company of Edward of Woodstock in 1362. Occurring in 1364, and probably to be associated with the garter knight who was a longtime companion of Edward of Woodstock, dying in 1369.
