Notes

Citizen of London, acting as a mainpernor for another trader in 1391, and the recipient of a licence to trade wheat in Aquitaine in 1392. He came from obscure origins and became a leading ironmonger in London. He came to the government's attention and was active on royal business in the 1380s. His reputation seems to have been severely damaged by his collaboration with Richard II in the king's dispute with the mayor and city in 1392. At his death in 1397 his goods and property were seized to meet debts to the crown for the customs that he was supposed to collect, and this seizure included his famous ledger. At the time of the dispute with the city, Richard II appointed him one of the sheriffs of London.
