12 December 1371. Westminster. For the prior and chapter of the almshouse of Saint-Jean-Dehors.
Order to the bishop of Périgueux , chancellor to Edward, prince of Aquitaine and Wales in the principality of Aquitaine, that he should hear and determine the appeal of the case between the prior and chapter of the almshouse of Saint-Jean-Dehors de la Fors outside the walls of La Rochelle 1 and Jean Rivaud Master Ryvaut and his wife, Marguerite Brun Brune, regarding an annual rent of 16l.. The prior and chapter have claimed that the rent, payable at the feast of All Saints, belonged to them and their predecessors for a long time past, and belonged to them by virtue of the gift and assignment of Guillaume Brun Bruni, who had previously possessed the rent by right, and for which they have the charters and muniments in their possession. However, Rivaud and his wife claim the rent by virtue of a sale and deed made by one Pierre Poncet Poncetti and his mother to Pierre Brun Master Bruni, father of Marguerite, and thus the rent ought to be payable to them. They sought the rent and its arrears, and the documents, at the assize of La Rochelle, held by John de Harpeden, seneschal of Saintonge, but the case has been adjourned, to their great damage, and they have appealed the case before the king, as king of France and England, at the last parliament. The bishop is to call the parties and others before him, examine the principal matter and everything else pertaining to the case, determine the issue and make execution, so that neither party suffers through fraud or burdensome expense.
